Make Your WebsiteAI-Readable.
You built a great website. But AI systems like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity are struggling to read it. A few simple text files fix that.
This guide explains the llms.txt file ecosystem — what each file does, how to create it, and how to get cited in AI-generated answers. Then use the generator below to build your files in under two minutes.
844,000+ websites have already implemented llms.txt, including Anthropic, Cloudflare, and Stripe — and the number is growing every week.

What is Answer Engine Optimization?
Search is changing fast. People are no longer just typing keywords into Google. They are asking full questions to ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews. These tools do not return a list of links. They generate a direct answer.
AEO is the practice of optimizing your website to be cited in those AI-generated answers. Traditional SEO gets you ranked. AEO gets you cited. The goal shifts from "appearing on page one" to "being the source the AI trusts."

AI quotes your site as a trusted source
Google's AI Overviews now appear in 88% of informational search queries. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude handle hundreds of millions of searches every month. Your job is to make your content as clear and structured as possible for the systems that are already deciding which websites to cite.
The Complete File Ecosystem
The llms.txt standard is actually a family of files, each serving a specific purpose. Here is every file you should know about, what it does, and when to use it.
A curated Markdown file at your website root that gives AI systems a structured map of your most important content. Think of it as the table of contents for a book — it does not contain everything, but it tells you exactly where to find what you need.

How to Create Your llms.txt
Creating an llms.txt file is straightforward. It uses standard Markdown formatting — the native language of most language models. You do not need special tools or coding skills.
Audit your content
Before writing a single line, identify your five to ten most important pages. These should be the pages that best represent what your site is about. For an AI-generated website, this might include your feature pages, key tutorial posts, and your main documentation.
Write your H1 and blockquote
Open a plain text editor. Start with your site name as an H1 heading (#). Then write a one-to-three sentence summary of your site in a blockquote (>). Be specific. The AI will use this summary to understand the context of everything else in the file.
Create your sections
Group your key pages into logical categories using H2 headings (##). Do not try to include everything. Curated is better than comprehensive here. Think of it like a table of contents — only include what matters most.
Add your links with descriptions
Under each section, list your pages using this format: - [Page Title](URL): Brief description of what this page contains. The description is not optional — it is what tells the AI whether to follow the link or skip it.
Add an Optional section
Include any secondary pages (like your About page or older blog posts) under a "## Optional" heading. This signals to AI systems that these pages are lower priority and can be skipped if context space is limited.
Save and upload
Save the file as llms.txt and place it at the root of your domain. Verify it is accessible at yoursite.com/llms.txt. That is it. No server configuration needed.
